The Piggy Back Trail & Stream Restoration Project Hyde Memorial State Park
Hyde Memorial State Park has been heavily used as an outdoor recreation getaway for Santafean’s and visitors since the 1930s heyday of Uncle Bennie Hyde himself. The cozy corridor formed by steeply wooded slopes along Little Tesuque Creek is again in need of some tender loving care. This Project will include several years of small diverse actions which, taken together, will make Hyde a happier place for plants, wildlife and people. Conservation efforts in this will include the removal of old fenced enclosures that have served to protect key natural areas. On other projects, some trees will be removed to reduce hazardous fire conditions and help sunlight grow wildflowers on the forest floor. Trail work on steeper slopes that are prone to soil erosion will be stabilized. And channel, bed, banks and floodplain of Little Tesuque Creek and its larger tributaries will be modified in subtle ways to maximize habitat for streamside plants and animals.
Guest donations will be used to directly support these critical conservation efforts to help restore and enhance popular recreational areas for many years to come.
Consider joining us during the summer as a volunteer in supporting these projects through our Give & Getaway Volunteer Vacation program.
